The next five days were a precious interlude with Bram that was interrupted by Hurricane Brian bearing down on them from the gulf with a vengeance. The six H-52 helicopters were in constant use, and the fifty seasoned Coast Guard pilots were being used up faster than any of them were able to get proper crew rest before flying again.

Storm ran for the safety of the hangar, her flight suit soaked before she made it inside. She walked tiredly down the long crosswalk between the busy crews repairing and preflighting the helicopters for coming missions.

Bram was already in the Ops center when she entered. Kyle Armstrong was coordinating the duty schedule that was filled with more SAR cases than they could handle. Storm thought Kyle’s lean face looked drawn. But didn’t everyone’s? Including hers. Bram roused himself from his thoughtful posture as he studied the chart on the wall. His blue eyes warmed with unspoken affection as Storm met his gaze. She mustered a small smile; it was filled with a silent answering tenderness for him alone.

“Coffee?” Bram asked her, already moving over to the pot.

“Please,” she replied thankfully, and walked over to the Ops desk.

“You look better than all of us put together, Stormie,” Kyle said, handing her the next case they would fly.

Bram ambled over, handing her a cup, a smile lingering in his eyes. He knew why she looked so good, and Storm had trouble covering up her own smile as she slid her fingers around the mug. Just the slight touch of Bram’s long strong fingers made her heart leap. How could she forget that wonderful night on the beach? The love they had shared between them had been pure and honest. It was a complete giving to each other without any games.

“I’d rather fly in a hurricane than have to handle drug smugglers,” she told Kyle, studying the report.

The pilot gave her a commiserating look. “You got one there,” he agreed.

Bram leaned over her shoulder, reading the report. Storm was acutely aware of his maleness, and she had to make a conscious effort to concentrate on the paper and ignore him. Once he turned his head, his blue eyes probing, disturbing and sensual. Sipping the coffee, Storm shot him a disgruntled look of warning. Bram knew how much he affected her—damn him!—and he was enjoying that bit of power over her a little too much.

“We’re going to relieve the 1406?” Bram asked.

“Yes. They’re running low on fuel.” Kyle glanced up at both of them. “It’s going to be a sector search,” he warned them.

Storm groaned. “A sector search?” That meant Bram would also be busy with navigation duties. Imaginary grid lines were drawn over the sea in the supposed area of the lost ship and then followed with the use of instruments and navigation. While it was one of the most accurate patterns for aircraft searching alone, it was twice as hard to fly the lines in inclement weather.

“Sorry, Stormie. This is where we bite the bullet and earn our wings.
